The Bamboo Primary Processing Centre (BPPC) was established at Field Research Centre, Velupadam, Thrissur District, with the support of the NBM during 2013-2014 to revive this sector by demonstrating the benefits of mechanised primary processing of bamboo to artisans and farmers.
One of the main objectives of the National Bamboo Mission is to improve post-harvest management, primary processing, seasoning plants, conservation technologies and market infrastructure by setting up modern primary processing units near the production source. The value addition and improvement in efficiency and quality of production of articles made of bamboo were expected to contribute significantly to reviving the traditional industry and make it a sustainable livelihood option for all involved.
The BPCC includes a set of Bamboo processing machineries like Bamboo cross-cutting machine, Bamboo Hydraulic Splitter, Bamboo Internal and External knot removing machines, Thick and Thin slivering machines, bamboo blind weaving machine, Vacuum/ Pressure impregnation treatment plant, Laser Engraving Machine, Bamboo Seasoning Plant drying system, Bamboo Round Stick Making, Stick Sizing and Stick Polishing Machines, Incense Stick Making Machine, Bamboo mat weaving machine etc.
