World Bamboo Day 2026 was celebrated at the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI), Peechi, with a programme highlighting the ecological importance of bamboo, its conservation, and sustainable utilisation.

The programme was inaugurated by Smt. Minu Varghese, President, Pananchery Grama Panchayath, who also led the distribution of bamboo saplings to the participants. Dr. V. B. Sreekumar, Senior Principal Scientist, KFRI, delivered the welcome address and presided over the function.

During the inaugural session, Sri. K. K. Subramanian and Smt. Jolly George, members of Pananchery Grama Panchayath, offered felicitations. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Sri. Arun V. R., Scientist, KFRI.

The inaugural programme was followed by technical sessions focusing on different aspects of bamboo conservation and cultivation. Dr. V. B. Sreekumar delivered a session on the ecological significance of bamboo, highlighting its importance in supporting ecosystems and promoting environmental sustainability.

A practical session on “Bamboo Nursery Management and Planting Methods” was conducted by Sri. Jibi P. O., Field Staff, KFRI, providing participants with practical information on bamboo nursery practices and appropriate planting methods.

The programme brought together farmers, Panchayath representatives, KFRI scientists and staff, and nature enthusiasts, providing a valuable platform for sharing knowledge and creating greater awareness about the ecological and sustainable potential of bamboo.
